“Duran Duran and the Party of the 80s”

“I feel sorry for the ’90s, because it was never able to be anything much more than the hangover to the party that was the ’80s”. Simon Le Bon

“I always say to people, the Eighties were so inventive because people wanted to stand out. By the time we got to the Nineties, everyone wanted to fit in. It was all about having the same pair of trainers and the same pair of jeans. That’s fatal. Whereas the Eighties you would never be seen in the same pair of jeans that somebody else was wearing”. Nick Rhodes

The 1980s saw the reinvention of Michael Jackson, the superstardom of Prince and the emergence of Madonna, Whitney Houston, Rick Astley, and Janet Jackson—who were all the most successful musicians during this time. Their videos became a permanent fixture on MTV and gained a worldwide mass audience.

“MTV didn’t exist in 1980, but by 1982, it had gotten to be a force to be reckoned with”. Nick Rhodes

“That was the whole point in forming a band. Girls. Absolutely gorgeous girls”. Simon Le Bon

Duran Duran are an English rock band formed in Birmingham in 1978. They were one of the most successful bands of the 1980s and a leading band in the MTV-driven “Second British Invasion” of the United States. Since the 1980s, they have placed 14 singles in the Top 10 of the UK Singles Chart and 21 in the Billboard Hot 100, and according to the Sunday Mercury, they have sold more than 70 million records.

While they were generally considered part of the New Romantic scene along with bands such as Spandau Ballet when they first emerged, the band later shed this image. The band worked with fashion designers to build a sharp and elegant image.

“It’s pathetic to have regrets about fashion. Things to do with my life, yes, I have regrets there”. Simon Le Bon

“Style has always been very important to us. We grew up in the ’70s. Music was glam rock, punk rock and a very stylish movement”.Nick Rhodes

The group was formed by keyboardist Nick Rhodes and bassist John Taylor, with the later addition of drummer Roger Taylor, and after numerous personnel changes, guitarist Andy Taylor and lead vocalist Simon Le Bon.

Duran Duran have always sought out innovative directors and techniques, even in their later years when MTV gave them little airplay. In addition to Mulcahy, they have had videos filmed by influential photographers Dean Chamberlain and Ellen von Unwerth, Chinese director Chen Kaige, documentary filmmaker Julien Temple, and the Polish Brothers, among others. According to Nick Rhodes, “Video is to us like stereo was to Pink Floyd”.

“I think pop culture is the greatest subject matter out there – ‘Other People’s Lives,’ as we wrote about on the last Duran Duran album. Most ideas for great songs come from real situations, something your friend said to you the night before, the girl that just left, or something traumatic in your life. Nick Rhodes

“We were five heterosexual, good-looking men. We competed against each other for the sexiest girls… I won”. Simon Le Bon
